Chapter 10
My ears rang with the calls of High Society creatures all screaming their bids for the final trophy girl. The leviathan struggled to keep up with the amount of hands that flew up for each bid, and he had gotten up to a thousand gold pieces in the span of a minute.
I felt nerves kicking in my chest as I prepared to start throwing my hat in the ring.
The atmosphere was pure chaos right now, but I was going to have to draw attention to myself when the super-high bidding kicked in. Even the rich had their limits, and I would be in the spotlight when I started to outbid everyone. I kept my injured elbow in tightly and smoothed down the fur on my wrists. All it would take was for one piece of hair to peel off for this all to come crashing down.
âTwo thousand gold,â the auctioneer leviathan said. âWho here is willing to pay two thousand gold for one of the rarest trophies in all of Hollowfell?â
That was when hands started to drop, and gargoyles grumbled in rage as the dragonling went out of their price range. There was still roughly a quarter of the room bidding, and I knew I had to join them.
âTwo thousand gold piecessss,â the leviathan called again.
My heart thudded in my chest as I raised my hand along with a dozen others. Some gargoyles glared at me, but I kept my gaze focused on the stage. It felt gross to be bidding on a girl, and I tried not to look Ash directly in the eye.
âMr. Sharp,â the griffin beside me chuckled. âWhat an exciting bidding war to jump into! You really did save yourself for the ultimate prize.â
Other High Society beasts turned to watch me as I kept raising my hand for each new bid offer. One spider-woman was visibly seething when she finally dropped her hand at the three thousand gold mark.
Chairs squeaked as more High Society bastards turned to look at me, and my throat felt dry from the amount of attention I was receiving. More competitors dropped out until only two other creatures were bidding.
The orange-eyed bandit I had spoken to earlier raised his hand unflinchingly for every offer, and another gargoyle woman who was foaming at the mouth to get the dragonling kept screeching for her bids.
âThree thousand five hundred gold,â the leviathan on stage said with a slightly shocked tone.
The gargoyle screamed angrily as she lowered her hand, and she threw her oversized hat onto the floor in fury. Creatures muttered around the room as they watched to see who would win the ultimate prize.
It was just me and the bandit left, and all eyes in the room were on us. Cleo and Kali hovered nearby with their drink trays as the bid continued to rise. The bandit did not want to give up this trophy girl, and I was worried he was going to just keep going as high as I did.
Surely he
